“Let the dances last”, he would like everyone to sing now, despite their sadness, o Dionysis Savvopoulos.

THE great Greek artistsongwriter, composer and lyricist, is now one with the clouds and as always happens with these personalities, he leaves behind a huge work, a musical legacy so special and so pioneering.

He was born in Thessaloniki, originally from Constantinople and Philippoupolis. In 1963 he left the Thessaloniki Law School in order to pursue singing and moved to Athens. He began his career in 1964 and was politically active throughout his career, performing in nightclubs alongside Maria Faradouri and Manos Loizos. During the junta, he was imprisoned twice for his political beliefs, in August and September 1967.

He met with great success from his early days as a musician and soon became very popular. He had combined Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa, two huge and special American figures, with Macedonian folk music and always added politically penetrating lyrics. He even managed, despite censorship something very difficult, to transmit political messages of freedom.

His timeless pieces, usually his own melodic and lyrical compositions, became beloved by the world and remain so today.

Songs that are simple and poignant at the same time, that are still sung today. Dionysis Savvopoulos wrote music history, without pursuing commercialism.

He supported the Greek song like no one else, at a time when – due to the satellite television that was slowly entering Greek homes – foreign music began to be broadcast more. Nionios was then inspired by an innovative music show entitled “Long live the Greek song”. He invited young Greek artists to his shows and it is no exaggeration to say that almost all of them had a wonderful career after their presence on it.

In 1966, when the composer was only 21 years old, his first album “The Truck” with rock, folk and folk elements was released and immediately became a sensation.

The nebula“, “The truck“, the “Birds of Misfortune» are just a few of the songs from the unforgettable first album.

Since then they have followed: “The Truck” (1966), “The Orchard of Madness” (1969), “Ball” (1971), “Dirty Bread” (1972), “Ten Years’ Pieces” (1975), “Happy Day” (1976), “Acharnis – Aristophanes who returned from the thyme” (1977), “The Reserve” (1979), “Tables Outside” (1983), “The Haircut” (1989), “Don’t Throw Anything” (1994), “Appendix A” (1995), “The Hotel” (1998), “The Timekeeper” (2005), “The Shaman” (2008).
