Peter Do was appointed its creative director Helmut Lang. The New York designer will debut his first collection for the legendary brand at New York Fashion Week in September. Hiding his face in surgical masks long before the pandemic, Peter Do has always had a complicated relationship with fame, but he made a statement when it was announced that he would be taking over the Helmut Lang reins.

“I am very honored to be entrusted with the opening of the next chapter of his legacy,” he said. “No one embodied radical thought more confidently than Helmut Lang“, he added.

Peter Do will officially join the atelier on May 15 and will oversee both the men’s and women’s collections alongside his own label. Since leaving Phoebe Philo’s studio to launch his own brand in 2018, Peter Do has won an LVMH award for his androgynous and deconstructed approach to clothing and rave reviews.

Helmut Lang is the founder of the eponymous company, Helmut Lang was born in Vienna, Austria in 1956 and started designing clothes in 1977 without studying. Lang founded the eponymous brand a few years later after moving to Paris, France in 1986.

He is arguably one of the most influential designers of the last three decades (although he retired from fashion in 2005 to focus fully on his artistic career) and his legacy continues to influence fashion. The iconic designer pioneered minimalism in the 1990s.
