Karytaina, just as it has been captured by the camera of time, it is presented in the exhibition entitled “We Remember – Nostalgum” organized by the Association of Karytines of Athens and Piraeus and will be inaugurated on Saturday, May 13, at 11 am, at Mansion of Nikolaos Dimitrakopoulos.

The history and the glorious past of Karytaina are captured in a series of black and white photographs, which form the main body of the exhibition and travel the visitor to other times, reviving events and awakening memories and strong emotions.

Karytaina

The aim of the exhibition is to promote and provide more complete knowledge about the Karytaina of yesterday, which is contained in a multitude of black and white photographs that were, for many decades, in old albums, in dusty boxes, chests, wardrobes and lofts. Still others, sent by loved ones from the front or from abroad, are signed or accompanied by a small, touching text and phrases such as “I kiss you with love”, “I love you”, “good luck”…

Karytaina

The time period covered by the photographic exhibition is the one hundred and ten years from 1870 to about 1980, during which the technology of black and white photography was developed, popularized and widely used.

Black and white gives a sadder, more melancholy tone to an image and emphasizes emotion and nostalgia. Even the black and white photographs of landscapes and monuments emphasize a nostalgia, an anticipation, a melancholy. They give the feeling of a deserted place and definitely put you in the process of thinking, reflection, imagination and nostalgia.

Karytaina

The dominant figure in many photographs is the heroic and suffering woman of Karytaina, bent, ragged, wrinkled, in the daily struggle for the survival of the family, as a mother, a wife but also as a tireless worker of the land. Among the images are landscapes and monuments of Karytaina on a black and white background, simple but rich in memories and emotions.

Karytaina

As it is mentioned, “a special feature of the exhibition is that it will take place in a space that creates and contains a heavy emotional charge for every Karytino. In the great hall of the Mansion of our fellow countryman Nikolaos Dimitrakopoulos, which we hope will soon become the Culture and Education Center of Karytaina and its wider region. Because it is judged that the particularly time-consuming, complicated, but particularly important work that has been done, should not be lost, but instead must be a legacy for our descendants, a systematic effort will be made to videotape the exhibition in detail, so that its full content is available for anyone interested in the future, in electronic form”.

The exhibition will run until 31 August 2023 (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm).
