Features redefinition of the wider political landscape the developments centering on the government’s initiative for the amendment for the monument of the Unknown Soldier are taking over. From the parliamentary process yesterday, a series of elements emerged that show that the issue triggers chain developments, which cannot help but affect correlations and balances in a wide political spectrum.
The process is expected to be completed today with the passing of the amendment, which will become the law of the state. And from that moment on, it will be seen in practice how easy or difficult it is to implement what it provides and how willing the authorities involved are to proceed in strict compliance with the new legislative framework. The high tones that dominated the Parliament yesterday and the messages that were formulated on both sides between the government and the opposition parties, predispose to a conflict that is at the beginning and will manifest itself in other ways in the near future. The government, however, is alone against the entire opposition on this issue.
At the same time, yesterday it was emphatically confirmed that there is a distinct distance between the government leadership and the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendiaswhom Kyriakos Mitsotakis indicated from the first moment as the central person responsible for the new regime that will apply to the monument.
Mr. Dendias chose yesterday to be absent from the debate in the Parliamentthereby giving his own message, which he made more clear with his statement on how the Ministry of National Defense will handle the issue of the Unknown Soldier. The Minister of National Defense drew up the statement of the President of the Republic, Konstantinou Tasoulathat the matter it must be sterilized by the current political current and underlined that the Ministry of National Defense is not going to treat the monument as an object of political exercise and division of society. The formulations very careful, without obvious peaks, but open to interpretations for differentiation from the central line of the Megaros Maximus.
From the prime minister’s environment, however, they were quick to downplay the developments surrounding Mr. Dendias. As they reported, of the seven ministers who co-signed the amendment, only George Floridis was in Parliament yesterday, so not only was the Minister of National Defense absent. They expressed no certainty that once the amendment is passed and becomes the law of the state “all co-competent ministers will do the necessary for its implementation”.
THE Kyriakos Mitsotakisin fact, in his deputation he somehow “showed” the next steps he expects from the Ministry of National Defense. “The Ministry of Defense is responsible for the maintenance and care of the site and can have an opinion on how it can be shaped in the future so that there is no confusion about what is public space and what is not.”he said.
However, there is concern within the government among executives about the way in which the provisions will be implemented and about the possibility of opening a new mobilization front on the occasion of the amendment but drawing momentum from the case of Tempe, which in this way could be rekindled.
