Father Julio Lancellotti revealed this Sunday (14), at the end of a mass at the São Judas chapel, in São Paulo, that singer Rita Lee donated pieces from her wardrobe to be delivered to homeless people.

“I never said this while she was alive, but she sent a lot of clothes,” said the priest. “They were delighted to receive Rita Lee’s clothes. Everyone wanted Rita Lee’s clothes.”

The priest said that the artist, who died on Monday (8) at the age of 75, was a dear friend. He thanked the donations and stated that she is now singing rock in heaven, with the angels.

According to the religious, the donated clothes were colorful, full of sparkles, mirrors and with special cuts. “When they saw Rita Lee’s clothes, their eyes grew big,” he joked about the people who received them.

Known for his social actions with homeless people, Father Julio even heard the suggestion of holding an auction with the costumes, but he did not accept the tip, claiming that was not what he donated for. “She sent it to be given to the street brothers. And that’s what was done”.

After the revelation, the mass ended with the song “Meu Bom José”, recorded by Rita at the beginning of her career, in the 1970s.

With her original style, the singer has influenced fashion in the country over the last six decades, as analyzed by journalist and creative consultant Erika Palomino.

Leather, leggings, vests, platform boots, synthetic fabrics, overalls, tailcoat and colored glasses were part of the iconic costume.

In an interview with Fantástico (Globo), the musician Roberto de Carvalho said that Rita did not want to leave. ‘I want to trade places with you, because you have so much more to do than I do’, he would say to the woman.

According to Roberto, the artist’s final moments were light. Family members set up a hospital structure in the couple’s apartment. “In the last phase, she looked like a little child, a little bird. And she stopped. At peace”.
