For a minute, try to remember what it was like to be 5 years old.
The play on the swings, the smell of freshly cut grass in the summer, sand on your swimsuit.
Back when our chalk drawings on the sidewalk had nothing to envy to Picasso’s paintings and our bikes were our magic carpets. We painted the world with markers, curiosity and laughter.
Children possess a rare kind of contagious optimism that accompanies them in the everyday life of their microcosm. They are not influenced by the opinions of others. Through scraped knees and wounds, they continue to try new things and explore the world with joy. Do you remember how good that feeling of curiosity and wonder was?
We grow wiser as we grow older, but we also know doubt, insecurity and shame. It’s easy to assume that the childlike spirit and courage we once had has disappeared from our adult lives – but whenever we need it, we can look for it again. In moments of insecurity, it would be interesting to call out the child in you and ask her what she thinks. If you let her talk to you, her response is sure to be filled with compassion, humor, confidence, and honesty.
Most of the time, we are our own biggest judges. If you find it difficult to recognize your worth and be happy about it, then try talking to yourself like you would talk to your 5-year-old self. Speak to him with love and kindness – just as you deserve to be spoken to. Ask him: what are you doing today? How do you feel; What is your favorite flower?
If we practice talking to ourselves in this way, the child within us will teach us self-love. Borrow her magical telescope to see the world through her own eyes.
