The archaeological dig continues to reveal new aspects of the unique history of Pompeii. As announced by the Italian Ministry of Culture, the skeletons of two men were discoveredaged over 50, who lost their lives during the earthquake that preceded the eruption of Vesuvius, in 79 AD.

The two skeletons were found in a building that housed a large bakery and shop for the sale of bread.

As can be seen from the position of the skeletons, the two men were crushed by the walls of the room in which they had tried to find shelter.

At the same time, near the skeletons of the two men, archaeologists found six ancient coins, two of which were silver, a necklace and a series of amphorae.

As the Italian media highlight, this is another aspect of the human dimension of this particular tragedy, the earthquake and the explosion that within two days extinguished every trace of life from this town in Lower Italy.

“This new discovery confirms that Pompeii is a huge archaeological laboratory, which in recent years – thanks to a new dynamic – has surprised the whole world, with a series of extraordinary archaeological discoveries,” said the Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano.
