Pieces of leading Greek painters and creators who have left their mark on contemporary Greek art will be auctioned on Thursday at Zappeion, in the great 19th & 20th century Modern Greek Painting & Sculpture auction by VERGOS Auctions.

The painting by Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), “May» is the work with the highest starting price (200,000-300,000 euros) at the auction

The painting for the last month of spring, the month of youth, fruitfulness and rebirth, belongs to a masterful series of 12 paintings, one for each month of the year as inspired by the great Greek painter.

According to the artist himself: “I was inspired for these 12 images, not by the Byzantine ones, as many thought, but by the Louis Philippe decorations with a gold background, as well as the French Crucifixion images of the 15th century, which put Christ a sash of transparent silk cloth. And those with a gold background in imitation of the Byzantine ones”, he says, among other things, regarding the set of these works.

Two more works of the auction stand out for their cultural value under the protection of the Greek state:

a) the work of Theofilos (1871 – 1934), “The Chieftains Ch. Anagnostaras and Ilias Mavromichalis destroy the Turks around Valtetsi in 1821”is inspired by the themes particularly dear to the artist of the Greek Revolution and

b) the “Composition” with female figures and an angel and the accompanying draft by Konstantinos Parthenis (1878 – 1967), with the dreamy forms that are characteristic of his personal style.
