The 76th Cannes Film Festival arrived and will last from May 16 to 27. The chairman of the jury is Mr Ruben Östlund, last year’s Palme d’Or winner with the film “Triangle of Sadness.” The remaining members of the jury this year are the actor Paul Danodirector and screenwriter Julia Ducournau, actress Brie Larson, actor Denis Ménochet, director and screenwriter Rungano Nyoni, director and writer Atiq Rahimi, director and screenwriter Damián Szifrón and actress and director Maryam Touzani.

This year’s Festival poster features French actress Catherine Deneuve – a photo taken by Jack Garofalo on the set of ‘La Chamade’. The poster was designed by Lionel Avignon and Stefan de Vivies.

The opening film will be Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, starring Johnny Depp as Louis IE’. The film that is going to close the Cannes Film Festival is Peter Sohn’s “Elemental” from Pixar.

  • “Asteroid City” by Wes Anderson: Competition Section

Plot: A conference of celestial observers is about to be disrupted by major global events. Wes Anderson, two years after his last film entitled “The French Dispatch”, returns with his characteristic style. This time, the cast has exploded and consists of many, big names like Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, Maya Hawke, Margot Robbie and Willem Dafoe.

  • ‘The Old Oak’ by Ken Loach: Competition Section

Plot: In a once glorious community before the mines closed, the owner of the last pub called ‘The Old Oak’ struggles to keep it open. At the same time, the situation is chaotic due to the settlement of Syrian refugees in the empty houses.

A veteran of the Cannes Film Festival, Ken Loach has won the Palme d’Or twice before for The Wind That Shakes the Barley in 2006 and I, Daniel Blake in 2016 – just one of 10 directors who have a double win of this particular prize! However, he announced that this will be his last film…
