Melanie Brown, or simply Mel B., one of the Spice Girls, switched teams. She still follows the music scene, but in a different way. The singer is now on the other side of the bar and debuts as a judge on the music reality show Queen of The Universe (Paramount +), decades after undergoing tests and selections before stardom.
The artist, who went through several stages until composing the all-female pop group fever in the 2000s, tells in an interview with F5 who did not find it at all difficult to judge the contestants’ performances. “I can’t do anything, at the end of the day I have to judge and contest. It’s a TV show and someone has to be eliminated at some point. The show has to go on.”
Cold, she? As for eliminations, Mel B swears no. “I don’t feel bad when someone goes home because they’ve had the chance and experience to show themselves to millions of people. It’s a great thing to be a part of,” he says.
The competition brings together drag queens from different countries. Every week, they perform for a jury of which Mel is part, to compete for the cash prize of US$ 250,000. The winner of the first season was the Brazilian Grag Queen, and the second edition is scheduled to premiere on June 3.
Despite her apparent coldness when talking about losers, who often see the dream of their lives crumble, the singer comments that the attraction involves emotion, yes, a lot for the life stories of the competitors and their battles to pursue a career.
“Each drag tells about their struggles and their path. Being part of the LGBTQIAP+ community is not an easy life to live and you have to listen to the stories. They represent the countries they come from and receive support from the people, and this is now being extended to the international plane.”
As someone who has been on the other side, being judged, Mel knows that pleasing may not be easy. That’s why she would choose a right song if she was in the competition. No risk, she gives the tip. “It would definitely be Spice Girls, it couldn’t be. I think ‘Wannabe’. But it could also be Céline Dion.”
An inspiration for many of the competition’s participants, Melanie says she also has her “idols” and references, of course. One of them is Tina Turner, queen of rock n’ roll who died at the age of 83, on May 24.
“There are a lot of women out there from my generation, the generation before and the generation after that who do their jobs and represent their culture and who they are. And they do it with great pride. Queen Latifah, Steven Nicks, Tina Turner. They are inspirations not only for me, but for many people. I’ve named just a few but the list is endless”, he says.
