‘If Bolsonaro or Doria go to a crack, they take it in the ear; daddy no, on the contrary’, says Supla to Mano Brown

Yes, it was him. Now a state deputy (PT-SP), Eduardo Suplicy appeared a few years ago in a video recorded at a Mano Brown concert. He appears dancing, intent and without moving, in the middle of the audience. The images went viral and showed the relationship of respect and admiration that exists between the two, reinforced in several other situations – in 2015, for example, the politician came out in defense of the Racionais leader, detained for contempt during a police checkpoint.

Mano and Suplicy, 81, met again a few days ago while recording the new episode of the Mano A Mano podcast. This time, the petista was not alone. He was interviewed along with his sons, musicians Supla, 57, and João, 48 – the first, the spitting image of his father, and the youngest, increasingly similar to his mother, former mayor Martha Suplicy, with whom the current Deputy was married for 36 years.

O F5 had access to the two and a half hour conversation, scheduled to arrive on Spotify this Thursday (8). Below are some excerpts:

RACIONAIS MC’S

At the beginning of the episode, the politician says that the songs of the rap group, formed by Brown in 1988, helped him to understand what young people from the periphery think. The deputy mentioned a party rally in 1994, in the south zone of São Paulo, in which the group performed.

“From then on, I felt an enormous affinity with you [Mano Brown]. That boy who can’t help with his family’s income and becomes a little plane for the drug trafficking gang, as a character in the Racionais song. ‘A man on the road starts his life again / His purpose, his freedom / That was lost, taken away / And wants to prove to himself that he really has changed.'”

POLICY AND BASIC INCOME

Suplicy’s subject-obsession for about 30 years, the basic income project, of course, was once again defended by the deputy, who explained and gave details about the program -in short, it consists of paying an annual government benefit to all Brazilians or foreigners residing in the country.

“[Isso significa] Greater freedom and dignity for all Brazilians”, says Suplicy. The rapper asks if Silvio Santos, for example, would also receive a payment. “A universal right is a right for everyone. He would contribute proportionately to his income.”

ROMANTIZED CRIME

Supla, João and Mano agree that it is difficult to keep faith and believe in change, but that Eduardo is one of the few people who continues to fight for what he wants. The rapper says that, in 2000, he romanticized crime.

“The reality of the hood today is assault. The people are afraid and this is reflected in politics and projects. Punishment is not the way, we know that, but this sounds like Racionais talk. Maybe I would romanticize it a little because I’m a composer and the scenery was horrible.”

LULA, PATRIOTISM and NEW YORK

Supla says he found the diversity at the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), on January 1, “very beautiful”, and mentioned the people of different origins who went up the ramp of the Planalto Palace to pass the presidential sash to Lula .

“It would be great if people managed to respect each other even if they thought differently. But that’s not the reality and it’s very sad.” Brown then asks João if he considers himself a patriot.

“I love Brazil, that word [patriota] lagged. But I’m very proud, I love this mixture and this miscegenation, which is also present in the music”, replies João. “When I listen to Jorge Ben I feel proud, the rest of the day I wish I was in New York”, comments Brown.

RIGHT AND LEFT

When it comes to politics, Mano Brown says that Suplicy “is the guy with the most credibility today”. The singer Supla then makes a comparison: “If you put Bolsonaro or Doria walking alone in the center or in a hood, they will get one in the ear.

FAMILY AND MUSIC

João and Supla say they are very different. The main and common point is the taste for music: Supla is from rock and João, from MPB and bossa nova.

“My father always gave us an example of a united family, but we fought a lot. Just yesterday”, says Supla. “Sometimes I want to punch you but I don’t punch you because I love you [às vezes eu quero te socar mas não te soco porque te amo],” he sings to his brother.
