Britain’s Prince Harry has challenged the legal validity of a government ruling that he should not be given police protection when he is on British soil even if he covers his own expenses, his legal representatives said.
Queen Elizabeth’s grandson and Megan’s American wife resigned from their royal duties in 2020 to pursue a new career in Los Angeles.
Since then the couple has hired a private company to protect them.
However, his legal representatives said that these arrangements did not provide the prince with the level of protection he needed when he visited Britain.
“In the absence of such protection, Prince Harry and his family will not be able to return home,” the statement said.
The announcement refers to an incident that occurred in July 2021 when, according to Harry’s lawyers, his safety was endangered as he was leaving a charity event due to lack of police protection.
The government has previously rejected two proposals to pay for his police protection, according to his lawyers.
One spokesman said the process behind the decisions was opaque and contradictory and failed to address all risks.
Harry called for a judicial review – a legal challenge to the legality of decisions made by a public body – in September 2021, the statement said.
His lawyers told him they had decided to release the information because of a leak in the British press.
