In May, it was announced that Paramount’s hit series about Montana rancher John Dutton (Costner) and his family, with whom he is at odds, would end with its fifth and final season this November.

In a new interview with THR, Taylor Sheridan admitted he’s “disappointed” with Kevin Costner’s departure.

“It limits the closure of his character. It doesn’t change it, but it cuts it” said Sheridan, who went from an unknown actor to the most prolific screenwriter in Hollywood in a decade.

Weeks after ‘Yellowstone’ was cancelled, Kevin Costner revealed that he is investing his time and resources into a Wild West project of his own – a film called ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ that has been in the works for 35 years.

“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this project that he wants to direct. He and the network were at loggerheads over when he could leave the “Yellowstone” series. “I said, ‘We can certainly work out a timeline for his preferred release date,’ which we did“, explained the creator of the series.

“My opinion of Kevin as an actor has not changed,” said Sheridan. “John Dutton’s creation is symbolic and powerful… and I’ve never had a problem with Kevin that I couldn’t solve with him on the phone. But once the lawyers get involved, then people can’t talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and try to shift blame based on how the press or the public seems to react“, he argued.
