These couples, some of whom were united in their lives, were special and the chemistry they developed on the big screen is still a model for many directors today.
In the long course of cinema, the couples of the big screen who stayed in history, many times entered the realm of legend and left their mark, are not few. There are those who, even with their single co-existence in a film, left an era, are considered emblematic of romance, such as Clark Gable with Vivien Leigh in “Gone with the Wind”, but also those who were linked in several or more and many films and we consider that they “go together” in the common memory. At least the cinephiles.
These couples, some of whom were united in their lives, will be remembered below, as their contribution to cinema was significant, they were special, the chemistry they developed on the big screen is even today a model for many directors, while the public he loved them and often felt familiar with them, like the members of a large family.
The selection of five couples was made with the criteria of the huge success they had in the cinema, the several and important films they acted together, the incomparable charm they radiated, but sometimes also the legendary stories that were created around their relationship.
Humphrey Bogart – Lorraine Bacall
“Immortal” couple of the big screen and at the same time one of the most loved couples in life. Humphrey Bogart, already a huge star, with unrepeatable successes in classics such as “Casablanca”, “The Maltese Falcon”, will meet the lithe body, with the soulful bass voice and the unprecedented, for the time, charm, Lorraine Bacall in 1943 on the set of the famous movie “The Siren of Martinique”. Bogie was turning 45 and Lorraine was entering her prime – just 19 years old. He smoked powder on the film sets, with tens of kilometers of celluloid to his credit, three marriages and with an appeal to drinking and smoking. She made her first – but impressively stable – step in the film studios. Love at first sight, which everyone in the studio will understand, from director Howard Hawks to the last assistant. Bogart will immediately divorce his third wife Mayo Method. Not to have another wedding, but because she really was the great love of his life. Lorraine will grow up with him, become a great actress and a good mother, tolerate his drunkenness and give him happiness for the next 13 years, until his untimely death in 1957. Of the films they played together, stand out the films noir “Howling the Storm” by John Huston and “The Petrified Forest” by Archie Mayo.
Fred Astaire – Ginger Rogers
For the older ones, the name of Fred Astaire stuck unconsciously and without a second thought to Ginger Rogers. Astaire, the leading musical dancer, to whom Nureyev and Balasnin bowed, and Rogers, who had to bleed to be able to stand, almost as an equal, next to him. The magical couple made ten musicals together, which have gone down in history, as Astaire’s inspiration and sparkling dancing ability met with Rogers’ incomparable fresh vitality and boundless industriousness. The legendary Hollywood couple didn’t have a good relationship outside the studios, but they gave us images of partying, romantic memories and even inspired Federico Fellini. They will meet on the set in 1933 for the musical “Carioca” and their chemistry will leave RKO producers speechless. They will convince them to star in nine more films – among them the masterpieces “Top Hat”, “Let’s Dance”, “In the Vertigo of the Dance”.
John Wayne – Maureen O’Hara
Of Hollywood’s paradoxical couples, as John Wayne went down in history as the leading tough “cowboy” of cinema, mainly in Ford’s films, and Maureen O’Hara, who became known for her romantic exotic adventures, her beauty, her unruly character and red hair and rose to the top by constantly improving her acting skills. And not only for that. “Duke” was an ultra-conservative – anti-communist to death – and Maureen an ardent supporter of Democrats and more progressive ideas. Nevertheless, they will be incredibly connected on the big screen, mainly thanks to Ford, but also the character of Wayne, who, aside from the politics, was probably a great guy. As Maureen had said, “it’s a joy to work with ‘Duke’, I wish all actors were as honest and authentic as him”. Among their best moments, Ford’s western Rio Grande, Andrew McLaglen’s light-hearted western The Great McLiddock, and period romantic drama A Quiet Man, another Ford masterpiece that would give him the last Oscar for Directing. One of the most beloved movie couples, mainly because when they were together, suddenly John Wayne became sweeter, he became another person, next to the beautiful and eternal tomboy from Ireland.
William Powell – Myrna Loy
Incredibly bright and witty movie couple, mostly connected through six amazing screwball mystery comedies (“The Thin Man”), playing Nick and Nora Charles, movies that younger people should discover. Two great actors, making the most of Albert Hackett and Frances Goodridge’s wonderful script (based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett), giving a performance recital. A worldly hedonistic couple in love, who, when not throwing their awesome parties, drinking endless cocktails and spewing unanswerable witticisms, are solving complicated mystery stories. Cinema champagne, with a cinematic couple that is bubbling with vitality, charm and acumen and that escaped the Hayes Code – the censorship imposed by ultra-conservative circles in Hollywood.
Giancarlo Giannini – Mariangela Melato
Guided by the dynamic and unconventional director Lina Wertmüller, Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato will compose one of the most explosive couples of European cinema. The two, in the years of their youth and their artistic peak, will star in three wonderful – today’s classic – films, which will forever give laughter, make thoughts, but also bring a tear, through the great blue-green Melato’s wet eyes and Giannini’s sparkling black eyes. The hilarious comedy “Mimic the Blacksmith,” the political drama satire “Love and Anarchy” and the quirky romance “The Lady and the Sailor” were huge hits in the 1970s. Films that would bring Wertmiller to the top, but bad lies Melato and Giannini will give this something more, they will make a couple that we will never forget.
Of course, there are many other couples, famous for their relationship and their contribution – for example: Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton, Spencer Tracy-Kathryn Hepburn – but also some more unconventional film duets, such as Bing Cosby and Bob Hope, Abbott and Costello, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, ‘Fat and Lean’ favourites, but that’s another and cuter subject…
