WHAT IS ADHD?

ADHD – acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – is a neurobiological disorder of genetic causes and appears in childhood and can accompany the individual throughout life, according to the website of the Ministry of Health.

In an interview with Folha in February of this year, biologist and neuroscientist Lívia Ciacci points out that ADHD has three striking symptoms: lack of concentration, impulsivity and hyperactivity (excess energy).

In the brain of a person with ADHD, according to the expert, there is a biochemical alteration in the prefrontal and premotor regions. Failures in the biochemistry of the frontal region are what lead to changes in impulses and restlessness, as this brain area regulates human behavior through self-control.

Ciacci also compiled a list of ADHD symptoms in adults. “If you checked more than eight items, seek psychological and psychiatric help”, she indicates.
