Brad Pitt “looted” the Château Miraval winery that he co-owns with ex-wife Angelina Jolie in France. The prosecution of Jolie’s lawyers, who sue the actor, claims that he would have spent millions of dollars on renovations in the pool and a recording studio. The information is from the Financial Times.
According to the company that runs the business, Pitt and his partners owe more than $350 million. Lawyers claim Pitt acted like a “petulant child” while engaging in a “shameless attempt to make money”.
The winery’s legal team said Jolie initially tried to sell her share of Miraval to Pitt, but withdrew because he made the deal conditional on signing a non-defamation agreement. They also alleged that Pitt “squandered the company’s assets, spending millions on futile projects, including over $1 million on pool renovations, building and rebuilding a staircase four times, and spending millions to restore a recording studio.”
The star also allegedly spent “almost a million euros a year constantly rebuilding stone walls using masons from Croatia” and around 3 million euros on unspecified expenses, such as “clothing work”.
The 59-year-old actor, who spent last weekend at the UK’s Silverstone race track filming his upcoming Formula 1 movie, denied the allegations and said Jolie had tried to damage his reputation by selling her share of the winery “behind off Pitt’s back” for $64 million in 2021 to a Russian investor. Pitt claimed in earlier filings that they had agreed “that they would sell their holdings separately only with the other’s consent”, a claim Jolie has denied.
There are still accusations of Jolie against Pitt, who would have attacked her during a flight with the children. This alleged aggression was exposed in court proceedings over the future of the winery, which they bought together for €25 million in 2008. According to court documents, the business generated more than €15 million in profits in 2022 alone.
The document says that since the divorce, Pitt “orchestrated a so far successful plan to take de facto control of Château Miraval”, alleging that he had excluded partners and refused to appoint neutral directors to the board of the entity based in Luxembourg, through which the winery operates.
Previously, lawyers for Pitt accused Shefler (the Russian investor, who tried to buy out Jolie) of attempting a “hostile takeover” of the winery, where the two actors were married. Pitt also claims he still owns 60% of the property, claiming he only “nominally” transferred 10% to Jolie in 2013.
