Petite Maman: Céline Sciamma’s new film A Tale of Humanity and Understanding

by

Few characters, specific landscapes and a general sense of fairytale are the few, but not limiting, components of Céline Sciamma’s new film. It is difficult to find the words to describe the species to which Petite Maman belongs. Maybe it’s an adult story, maybe it’s a family drama. But it is definitely a movie that was not made to fit in boxes.

At Petite Maman, the present speaks to the past

At the beginning of the film we meet 8-year-old Nelly, a “charismatic” girl, as she has been described by those around her. Indeed, Nelly seems to have a greater understanding of some situations than the adults around her. Nelly has just said goodbye to her grandmother and returns to her house with her family to pack her things. When the mother suddenly leaves the same night, as a child, she looks for some answers in her father’s face but without getting back what she is looking for.

Taking a walk in the woods, Nelly meets a girl who looks very much like her. She later learns that this girl has the same name as her mother, Marion. From there, a simple and beautiful game is created with the memories and the time that invites us to dive in our childhood.

The figures of the two girls and their conversations bring to the film the element of magical realism

Petite Maman reminds us that some children grow up and “grow up” faster than others. The film serves as a safe haven where one can get in touch with what was before it became what it is today. And while that sounds pretty complicated today, it’s not really. Nelly and Marion are proof that sometimes not only facial features are inherited, but also sadness, anxiety and pain.
