Maitê Proença complains about the lack of invitations to make soap operas: ‘I don’t think they like me’

The telenovela “Liberdade, Liberdade (2016)” was Maitê Proença’s last work on Globo. Since then, the actress, who sued the broadcaster to claim her labor rights and employment relationship, since her contract was as a legal entity and not under the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT), has worked in few television productions. With several successful plots under her belt, she recognizes that she misses acting in the format and complains about the lack of invitations.

“Honestly, I don’t know if there’s a lack of characters for me. I think they don’t like me, I don’t know, they don’t want me, they don’t invite me”, laments the actress, who describes the production pace of telenovelas as exhausting. “Working on a soap opera is extremely exhausting… Exhausting. It’s insane, there wasn’t even time to breathe, this ended up making people sick”, she points out. “But when they call me again and I find a character good enough to face this marathon, I will”, she said in an interview with Veja magazine.

Currently on display with the monologue “O Pior de Mim” at Teatro das Artes, in the west zone of Rio, Maitê also spoke about bisexuality in the interview. In 2021, she had a publicly assumed relationship with singer Adriana Calcanhoto. “I was with a person. By chance, that person was female, and I liked her characteristics as a woman. And that’s it, there’s nothing more than that, I’m not going to put a label on myself. Let people do that. I’m free, “he explained.

Maitê stated that he sees a difference in having a relationship with a man or a woman. “There is a difference, yes. That’s why it’s good, you vary, expand”, she said, who also did not hide having used drugs in the past: “In my time, drugs were a form of self-knowledge. They were not linked to drug trafficking, we didn’t know, they had less weight in this drug wars thing. It was something from the hippie era: ‘let’s open and expand awareness so that prejudices go away and put love in its place'”.

She commented that today she does not use any illicit substance: “I’ve always been too weak for drugs and drink. My body can’t handle it. Nowadays my drug is health, I like it better.”
