Artists seeking a connection with the history of spinning painted a female figure draped in flax flowers
Since 2007, Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek are the artistic duo Studio Giftig. On the occasion of the annual Hit the North street art festival, the Dutch artists arrived in Belfast in Northern Ireland and last spring completed a mural, which pays tribute to the history of the building on which it was created. ‘Belfast Spring’ is part of a new series in which the duo surround their signature portraits with flying objects.

They were told that they would be painting in blind view of an old linen spinning mill. Looking for a connection with the history of spinning, they painted a female figure surrounded by flax flowers, since linen threads are made from flax. Flax is a flower that symbolizes rebirth. And the Hit the North festival, in its tenth year this year, is a way to renew the city through art.
With shades of blue and light purple, the mural has a calm, soothing aura. A soft light appears in the center behind the female figure as she calmly looks to the side. Her hand grips her scarf tightly as she looks ready to throw off the last shackles of winter and embrace the new season.

Studio Giftig exhibits more works in this new style in the exhibition “An End Has A Start” at the Goldshteyn Saatort Gallery in Paris, which ends on September 20.
