The digital global auction house and content platform JOIPTER founded by the rapper, singer, songwriter, music producer and fashion designer, Pharrell Williamsannounced that works by the artist would be sold Ernie Barnes presented for the first time.

Barnes, a renowned African-American painter and former professional football player, gained significant recognition during the Civil Rights Movement for his signature neo-Mannerist style, characterized by elongated and flowing figures in dynamic paintings.

Beyond his artistic talent, Barnes was known for his commitment to community and social justice.

Proceeds from the “Holding Court” auction will go to the Getude Research Center, a community-based organization founded by sisters Serena and Venus Williams and Issa Price.

The center provides therapeutic programs and resources to individuals and families affected by violence and systemic oppression. The programs were established in honor of the late sister of Serena and Venus Williams and Issa Price, Jetunde Price.

Works by Ernie Barnes

Among Barnes’ most famous works is the 1976 painting Sugar Shackdepicting a Black American dance club, which appeared on Marvin Gaye’s album cover “I Want You” and in the TV series “Good Times”. Recently, the iconic work was sold for a record price of $15.3 million by auction house Christie’s.
