This summer, Sting will perform the Police’s most iconic song, the “Every Breath You Take”, which celebrates its 40th anniversary as a quintessential pop anthem. The tune is so catchy and durable that it was even studied by researchers at the University of Denmark, while in 2019 BMI records, the leading copyright company, recognized it as the most played song in radio history. In July 1983, he dethroned classic songs such as Beat It by Michael Jacksonthe Let’s Dance by David Bowie MsIrene Cara’s Flashdance… What a Feeling on the Billboard charts and catapulted the songwriter to stardom. But the song’s creation and success also served as a “tragic epilogue” to Sting’s first marriage and to his band, which helped define the music scene of the 1980s.

“It’s an ugly song,” Sting once said of the track that had just made the Police the most popular pop group in the world. He wrote it while in the middle of an inspiration retreat in Jamaica, in the house formerly owned by Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond series.

The British musician has always maintained that the song was a healing way of dealing with the breakdown of his first marriage to actress Frances Tomelty, mother of his first two children.

The divorce was covered extensively by the press at the time. After almost a decade with the Irish actress, Sting began an affair with Trudie Styler, one of Tomelty’s best friends. Since 1977 – even before the songwriter formed the group that would turn him into a global phenomenon – the actress was the couple’s neighbor in a building in London’s Bayswater district, near Notting Hill. As he writes in his autobiography, Broken Music, he fell in love with Trudie Styler from the first moment he met her, but his commitment prevented him from making it happen for years.

After the infidelity was discovered, Trudie Styler was “punished” by the scandal. Her illustrious career came to an abrupt halt amid accusations that she was responsible for The Police breaking up.

“None of us are proud of a situation that happened. It just happened. We loved and lived together and then got married and had more children. And this is the story of our lives,” the actress told the Guardian newspaper.

The following year saw the birth of Mickey, the couple’s first of four children, and Sting and Styler married in 1992. The couple’s early years were tumultuous, but in 2023 the couple now boast famous friends: Robert De Niro, Madonna and Clinton.

Together they have been involved in environmental activism with the Rainforest Foundation, supported indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia and South America, pioneered the promotion of organic food and broken down taboos around tantric sex. The couple also share a passion for viticulture.

With an estimated fortune of more than $400 million, the British star is considered one of the richest artists in the world after selling his entire catalog of songs to Universal Music last year for an astronomical sum.
