“The Prodigy are not only back, they’re here to reclaim their throne.” This was the common admission of the British press for the band’s first, sold out, performances after the death of Keith Flint in 2019. This was exactly the feeling we all got last Friday, in Water Square, as part of the Release Athens Festival. The Prodigy didn’t just remind their good old self but appeared reborn giving us another strong concert memory.

A memory that for us was even more special, since we had the opportunity to enjoy historical pieces of the 90s from … high up, from the VIP balcony of opaponline.gr, which brings new air to the entertainment.

Lip Forensics and Primal Scream warmed up the audience

The duo of two active members of the Athens alternative scene, Lip Forensics, thrilled the audience with their unique attempt to musically bridge their indie origins with the electronic sound of tomorrow and, as the applause showed, the effort was highly successful. Next up were Primal Scream who returned to Greece for the first time after 15 years to offer together with Prodigy one of the most important nights of the last -many- years.

Prodigy forever

The wait was now over and the moment we had been eagerly awaiting for many years had arrived. The Prodigy appeared on stage and despite the resounding absence of Keith Flint, everything was reminiscent of the band’s glory days with the top live acts on the planet. After all, he appeared in one of their most iconic songs, Firestarter, dancing in the background of the stage in the form of a laser outline, in an attempt by the Prodigy to remind us that Keith will never really leave them.

The energy of Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality didn’t let you think for a moment that something has changed since that band that was born inspired by – usually – illegal rave parties. Breakbeat, industrial, hardcore techno, jungle, rave, hip-hop and punk alternated in the sounds of Prodigy, while the audience was completely surrendered to the musical world that was being born before their eyes on stage.

Although the expectations we had before the concert were high, the Prodigy made sure not only to exceed them but also to confirm to us that indeed “They live (and they will always live) forever”.
