Adam Devine appeared on Theo Von’s podcast, “This Past Weekend”during his tour of the “The Out-Laws” of Netflix and shared his theory that the Marvel movies and other superhero movies “killed” the traditional Hollywood comedy.

The actor said that because Marvel movies rely so much on humor (see the “Ant-Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchises, for example), they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy movies.

You see comedies these days and you think this is not a comedy,” Devine said. “Where are the jokes? There are still good sitcoms out there, but comedy movies are… a tricky thing. My theory: I think Marvel screwed them over. I feel like superhero movies have ruined comedies because you go to the theater and expect to see something that cost $200 million to make, and comedies aren’t that. So you say, “Why should I spend the same amount of money to go see a low-budget comedy in the theater when I can spend that money to see something worth $200 million?” And they still make these movies kind of funny, like, “Oh my god, is that raccoon talking? That’s hilarious!”. It is, but it’s not a real comedy».

“Every studio put out a lot of comedies a year,” noted the actor. “And there were about 45 comedies in the cinema a year. So every week or so, there’s a new comedy in theaters. Last year, there were 6 or 7. It’s crazy».
