Six years ago, presenter Maju Coutinho, 43, froze eggs so she could postpone motherhood. However, she considers the pressure to have a child to be sexist.
In an interview with Veja Rio, the presenter of Fantástico (Globo), married to publicist Agostinho Paulo, said that this subject is not closed to her, but that when asked about the topic, she feels bad.
“I consider it a sexist question. We don’t see this same issue raised for men. It’s a demand from the feminine as if it were our obligation: it has to be like this”, he began.
“I’m not saying that I won’t have children, that I can’t adopt. It’s not a closed issue for me, so much so that I froze my eggs at 37. But I believe that, by talking openly about it, we can reduce the pressure on women a little.” , added the journalist.
In the opening of last year, Maju gave an interview to the newspaper O Globo in which she said she did not want to be a mother. “My husband has two children, right? He’s already a grandfather, he even has two grandchildren. He already had teenage children when we met. And we get along very well the way we are, so I never had this super need to be a mother,” she said.
Maju has been married to Agostinho since 2009. “Suddenly, I change my mind, adopt or get pregnant. I’m not saying it’s a closed game, but at the moment it is,” he added.
Last Tuesday (18), the Justice of São Paulo unanimously upheld the conviction of two men for acts of racism and racial slur against journalist Maju Coutinho. They were also convicted of misrepresentation and corruption of minors for inducing three teenagers to commit the same crime. The decision is at second instance and can be appealed.
Érico Monteiro dos Santos and Rogério Vagner Castor Sales, using fake profiles on social networks, accessed the station’s page and cursed the journalist, referring to her race and color. The appeal’s rapporteur, judge Augusto de Siqueira, said that the offenses reached an “undetermined number of people, not just the offended, so that they well configure the crime of racism”.
