The Mantineias, as the residents of the area call them, include the Little and the Great Mantineia, the beach of Sandova and reach as far as Kitries.
Mantineia is perhaps the most hidden summer paradise of Messinia.
We find them very close to the beautiful city of Kalamata and only 15 kilometers from it.
The Mantineias, as the residents of the area call them, include the Little and the Great Mantineia, the beach of Sandova and reach as far as Kitries.
In fact, Mantineia is the stronghold of Messinian Mani and for this reason they have a rich history.
During the Turkish rule, Kitries was the seat of the Beys of Mani, as well as the most important port of the Messinian Gulf.
Also, here the historic “Agreement of Kitria” was signed in 1819 by the Mavromichalia, Grigoraki and Troupaki families who promised each other peace as well as the union of their forces during the Revolution of 1821, while in March 1821 Petrobeis Mavromichalis took over as leader of the Spartan forces.
Today, Messinia in general, but Mantineia in particular, is perhaps the rising force of Greek tourism, as the amazingly beautiful natural landscape with trees ending in the sea and the crystalline coasts make up a rare landscape for quiet, relaxed holidays.
In Mantineia you won’t find forests of umbrellas, but your eyes will be filled with greenery and the sea, while the tavernas of the area offer fine mezes with the local pure virgin olive oil dominating the local cuisine.
So what are you waiting for?
The Mantineias are waiting for you.
