Mayor Eduardo Paes announced this Monday (4) that he will reduce speed along the entire waterfront of Rio de Janeiro to prevent further pedestrian accidents from happening. He has already requested a study from CET-RJ (Rio Traffic Engineering Company).
The decision was motivated by the accident that involved actor Kayky Brito, last Saturday (2), and has caused great commotion throughout Brazil. The speed limit on the road is 70 km per hour.
“I determined that CET-Rio present me with a change in the limit of Rio’s waterfront later this week. And we are going to move forward with these changes in other roads in the city!”, wrote the Rio representative on social networks.
Paes stated that he intends to make these changes in other roads in the Rio de Janeiro capital to reduce the number of accidents related to pedestrians being run over.
“The running over of actor Kayky Brito clearly shows that the speed allowed on many roads in the city is excessive. To imagine that our Orla – a place of contemplation, leisure and peace – has a maximum speed of 70km is absurd. Regardless of responsibilities in the case in question, issue, it is not admissible to maintain this,” he said.
Kayky Brito was run over on Avenida Lucio Costa, at number 4700, in Barra da Tijuca, west of Rio de Janeiro. The actor was with friends, including the actor and presenter Bruno de Luca, shortly before the fact. The 16th Police Precinct is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
According to the delegate for the case, Ângelo Lages, Kayky was at the Dona Marta kiosk, located at post 6 in Barra da Tijuca. He was having fun with friends, including de Luca, and went to the car to get an artifact.
When trying to return to the scene, the car that ran over him committed the fact. There was an attempt to deviate from the actor, but it was not possible.
