The value of the painting is estimated at $25,000 to $38,000
Original sketch of Winnie, (Winnie the Pooh), protagonist of children’s books and cartoons, which was hidden in a cellar, wrapped in a tea towel and forgotten in the back of a drawer recently discovered and will be auctioned.
According to auction house Dominic Winter Auctioneers, who is responsible for the sale, black and white sketch may be the last copy that illustrator Ernest Howard Shepard, created with this character and one of the last drawings in Alan Alexander Milne’s first book “Winnie-the-Pooh”.
Sheppard drew the image on a small card 8.90 by 16.50 centimeters when he was 79 years old. The card dates from 1958, more than three decades after the book was published in 1926.
In the illustration, Winnie the Pooh rides off into the sunset with his friend Piglet. “We occasionally see reproductions of this famous design that have no commercial value, so we were thrilled to be able to authenticate it immediately and save it,” the auction house said in a statement.
According to Dominic Winter Auctioneers, the painting is estimated at $25,000 to $38,000.
The drawing will be sold on September 27 alongside 400 books, manuscripts and pictures from the William Foyle Foundation Library’s collection, which dates back to the 13th century. The frame and tea towel in which the sketch was found will also be made available to whoever acquires it.
