The “young people of the Third Age”, as the members of a collective in Thessaloniki, who created the group “Cohabitation of friends 60+ and 60-” dream of creating their own community, with cohabitation and joint activities in one building.
“We want to live the rest of our lives together with friends, so we ourselves plan it and we want to experience it and make it happen, refusing to be forgotten, empty and alone, in some private for-profit nursing home” they say in information brochure giving the stamp of their initiative.
As Ritsa Tzouzou explains to APE-MPE, they are claiming the reuse of empty buildings belonging to the Local Government in order to transform them into places of decent living for members of society who have found themselves in a dead end.
“Many and many of us help our children financially and live for financial reasons with them or in small apartments. But we want to make friends, to create the conditions for living together, sharing and company, which is so difficult in big cities” says the member of the group. She, in fact, confesses that when she became a widow, she had a hard time in her company because she felt that she didn’t “fit in” with her friends’ couples, something that changed with the first meetings of the group.
“For about a year now, we have been meeting once a week in a cafe in the center of Thessaloniki to get to know each other better and friendships have already developed. In the summer we also did a cohabitation rehearsal, with hospitality in our holiday homes, while we support in solidarity those who are facing problems” says Mrs. Tzoutzu.
“Our realism,” states their brochure, “says nothing is impossible.”

The group, with a central banner “Housing in the 3rd age, not in nursing homes”, will be at a stand at the Greenwave Festival which ends tomorrow night and is organized by the Ecological Movement of Thessaloniki, in the park of the CHANTH.
