Hip hop artist Kanye West will have to be fully vaccinated if he wants to perform in Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today, after the media announced that the musician is planning an Australian tour for March.
The warning came just two weeks after tennis superstar Novak Djokovic’s hopes for a Grand Slam title were dashed when a court upheld the government’s decision to cancel his visa due to Covid-19 regulations and the fact that he was unvaccinated.
“The rules are that you have to be fully vaccinated,” Morrison told a news conference.
“They apply to everyone, as everyone found out very recently. It does not matter who you are, it’s the rules. Follow the rules and you can come. “If you do not follow the rules, you can not.”
Morrison made the remarks following an article in the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday, citing sources in the music industry, according to which West plans to give concerts in stages in March in Australia.
Representatives for West, who released his latest album “Donda” in July, were not immediately available for comment.
West West’s vaccine status is unknown. The musician had run for the presidency of the United States in 2020.
In a 2021 interview on social media, he stated that he had received a dose of vaccine, but in an interview in 2020 in the financial magazine Forbes, he called the vaccination “the mark of the beast”.
Australia, one of the countries with the highest rates of vaccination against Covid-19, faced an explosive wave of infections last month powered by the fast-spreading Omicron variant, with 2 million cases reported.
