The region of Zagori was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Zagori is an area in the Pindos mountain range, in Epirus, in northwestern Greece.

In the area there are 46 settlements, the so-called Zagorochoria, which are scattered on the foothills and slopes of Pindos.

The Minister of Culture spoke of a great success for Greece

“For the first time, a cultural asset of our country, which is an excellent example of our latest cultural heritage, is registered in the Catalog. All the Greek inscriptions to date have concerned goods from Antiquity or Byzantium,” said Lina Mendoni.

The international Organization recognized the outstanding universal value of the architecture of Zagorochoria, as a excellent example of survival and interaction of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.

Also, as stated by the Minister of Culture, UNESCO recognized the authenticity and integrity of the property, components necessary for it to be included in the World Heritage List.
