It has been described as Britain’s “most unpredictable national treasure”. But now it seems graffiti artist Banksy whose works sell for millions of euros, is to make a “surprise appearance” at the Supreme Court. Maybe not…

In a report by the “Daily Mail” it says that Banksy – this is the pseudonym of the famous artist – is a 53-year-old who studied at Robin Gunningham public school and is named as the first defendant in a lawsuit accusing him of defamation.

His co-accused is the company founded by Banksy, which he named ‘Pest Control Ltd’. Contrary to its title, the company “sells” and advertises his art, which is always created at night and away from the prying eyes of the world, and adorns walls – and not only – in Bristol and London. In fact, his works will be seen from the West Bank to Detroit!

According to the “Daily Mail”, the man who will lead the famous artist to the courtrooms is 56-year-old Andrew Gallagher (Andrew Gallagher), a businessman who started in the music industry, organizing rave parties in the 1990s, before being “exploited” the commercial potential of graffiti.

“I didn’t realize it at the time, but most of the photos I took back then were of a young kid who was ‘listening’ to the name Banksy,” he explained in an interview last year with the same outlet, adding that the cards and other merchandise that sells are “affordable products for fans and there are millions of fans”.

Banksy and Pest Control remain silent. After successfully applying for a trademark in the E.U. in 2014, they saw that decision overturned when Gallagher appealed in 2021. The judges noted that Banksy, who has said that “copyright is for losers,” had long expressed disdain for intellectual property rights. ownership, while remaining anonymous. Last year, however, Banksy won a separate lawsuit, confirming his right to trademark his series of works.

However, in 2008 the Daily Mail came very close to “revealing” his identity, using a photo taken in Jamaica of a man in a blue shirt and jeans. Her reporters visited Bristol, said to be Banksy’s birthplace, where a man claimed the identity of the man in the photo was Robin Gunningham. Banksy has denied that the photo is his.
