NFL star Travis Kelce said Friday he feels “on top of the world” as he navigates a new level of popularity since rumors began about an alleged romance with pop icon Taylor Swift.
The singer’s appearance at the Kansas City Chiefs’ last two games – at home against the Chicago Bears and on Sunday against the New York Jets – mobilized her legion of fans and the NFL seized on what it called a “pop cultural moment.”
Kelce, whose comments about alleged encounters with Swift were limited to conversations with his brother Jason on his popular “New Heights” podcast, spoke to reporters at the Chiefs’ training headquarters and said he was happy to ride the wave of popularity. “I was already on top of the world after the Super Bowl, and now I’m even more on top of the world,” said Kelce, who turned 34 on Thursday. “It’s fun”.
Kelce, who as a tight end helped Kansas City win the Super Bowl against brother Jason’s Philadelphia Eagles in February, has seen his social media following soar and jersey sales soar.
The Kelce brothers’ mother, Donna, was also caught up in the storm, answering questions about whether Travis and Taylor are really a couple and what she and the artist talked about while watching two Chiefs games from their luxury suites.
She told CNN on Friday that the attention was “unreal.”
FOCUSED ON VICTORY
Despite his two Super Bowl titles and his status as a renowned “podcaster”, the whole situation has thrust Kelce into a new level of popularity. “We’re dealing with the paparazzi,” Kelce explained. “It comes with the territory. There are a lot of people who care about Taylor, and rightly so. You just have to keep living and learning and enjoying the moments.”
Kelce said all this attention won’t distract him from his work, noting the Chiefs have won three straight games since opening the season with a loss to the Detroit Lions, a game he sat out with a knee injury.
“At the end of the day, I’ve always been pretty good at knowing the difference and being able to stay focused,” he said. “I’m having fun… making sure my focus is on winning the game, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
Swift is also in a good place. Advance ticket sales for his “Eras” tour film topped $100 million worldwide on Thursday, making it the best-selling concert film in history.
