Britney Spears wrote in her new autobiography, The Woman in Me, that when she was dating Justin Timberlake in 1999, at the age of 17, she became pregnant but had an abortion. The painful experience was kept secret for 20 years and was revisited in the book, which will be released on October 24. The excerpt was obtained exclusively by People magazine.
The magazine released a description of the singer’s reaction to the pregnancy: “It was a surprise, but for me it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always hoped we would have a family together one day.” The then boyfriend did not react in the same way.
According to the singer, the miscarriage only happened because of the singer: “Justin was definitely not happy with the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were too young.” The couple began their relationship in 1999, when Britney was 17 and Justin was 18.
“If it were up to me, I never would have done it. And yet, Justin was so sure he didn’t want to be a father,” she wrote. The socialite also described the experience as “harrowing”.
People magazine says it tried to contact Justin Timberlake but received no response.
The couple separated in 2002. Marrying dancer Kevin Federline, Briteney became the mother of two sons — Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17.
