The Carabinieri Corps, specialized in combating the illegal trade in works of art and archaeological heritage, seized and returned to Greece, through the ambassador to Italy, Eleni Sourani, five ancient Greek coins, which had been put up for sale in internet for 1,500 euros. According to information, the individual who illegally possessed the coins had not realized their true value.

The investigation was coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office of Milan, while the operational part was taken over by the Carabinieri of Monza. The coins date from the fifth to the second century BC, from the classical to the Hellenistic period. They were kept in excellent condition and on their faces depict Athena and Glaucus, Alexander the Great with a “lion”, Zeus, Dionysus and Heracles, as protector of Thassos. These are valuable objects, which are connected to the social, commercial and cultural reality of ancient Greece.

This is a particularly important move, which confirms the close cooperation between the Greek and Italian authorities in the field of cultural heritage protection. Cooperation that we aim to strengthen with the exchange of valuable experience and knowledge, which are also based on the use of advanced technological means“, said Mrs. Sourani to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency.
