Works by different artists, such as Pablo PicassoThe Ai Weiwei and American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe will come together under one roof this week in a space that curators describe as the world’s only museum dedicated to censored art.

The Museu de l’Art Prohibition (Museum of Forbidden Art) in Barcelona consists of approx 200 projects that have been reported, attacked or withdrawn from exhibition spaces.

Tatxo Benet, a journalist and businessman, started the collection five years ago and finances the museum, which opens on Thursday, out of his own pocket. “This is the only museum in the world dedicated to censored art.” he stated. “While artistic and aesthetic value played a role in the selection, the main factor in the works’ inclusion in the collection was censorship“, he added.

A triumph of freedom of expression

There are works that may not have much artistic value, but because of their history they deserve a place in the museum. This is what these works have in common, and it shows that the censorship failed, because here you can see them. It is a triumph of freedom of expression».

Bennett cites a collection of drawings by ex-detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp as an example of his philosophy. When in 2017 an exhibition of freed prisoners’ work was organized in New York, a member of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum Council called it a “travesty”.
