What we will see in cinemas from today, Thursday, February 3

by

The drop in tickets seems to have no end, as in addition to the problems that have plagued the cinema for the past two years, there was last week’s snowfall that kept some of the potential spectators at home.

In addition, the distribution offices are holding some strong movie titles, until the announcement of the Oscar nominations, which will take place next week, in order to get something from the “glamor” of Hollywood and to make better money.

So tonight the premieres are limited to just four new moviesfrom which the Maltese, deeply human, drama stands out “To Skari” by Alex Camilleri.

There is also the Austrian drama “Great Escape” by Sebastian Maize, the children’s animation “A Happy Family 2” and the sci-fi adventure of science fiction “Moonfall: The Dark Side of the Moon” of the famous Roland Emerich.

The Scoop (Luzzu): Drama film, Maltese production of 2021, directed by Alex Camilleri, with Jessmark Sikluna, Michela Farougia, David Sikluna, Frida Kautsi and others.

A deep human story of ordinary everyday people in toil, that the harsh reality, the change of times and together the savagery of a capitalism that no longer looks only at numbers and profits, puts them on the sidelines, to submit to the big bosses, to its huge industry fisheries and fish trade. A story that comes to us from Malta but could also be from Greece, southern Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean.

The victim of these difficult times is also the hero of the film, a poor fisherman, with his traditional wooden hull, the “loutzou” (boats painted in bright colors and with two painted expressive eyes on their bows), who in order to afford and to find the money, for the special treatment that his newborn son needs, he will have to enter the dark world of the illegal fish trade, in the black market circuit, to destroy his boat, with which his father and grandfather were fishing to receive the EU grant.

Alex Camilleri, in his directorial debut, following in the footsteps of Rossellini, but also the cinema of social realism of the Darden brothers and using a real fisherman for the leading role, but also other Maltese fishermen for the supporting roles, illuminates one of the most abominable developments, for a work that goes hand in hand with the course of man thousands of years now.

Respect for nature, for the protection of maritime wealth, gives way to greed, to the madness for unbridled profits, even to the destruction of traditional wooden hulls and even to EU funding. Instead of Europe subsidizing its conservation tradition, works of art, elaborately made by craftsmen of a world where man modestly viewed the greatness of nature, with respect for the product that nourished them, its bureaucrats in Brussels with a decision sent them to ruin.

It may seem small, in the face of all that we have been experiencing in recent decades, this EU decision, but it is so indicative of the contempt for tradition and the people who defend it, it demonstrates the chaos that separates the common man from the “whites”. collars “that decide for him.

Camilleri surprises with his immediacy, tells his story with simplicity, highlights the beauty of the sea and the difficult life of fishermen, avoids postcards, has documentary elements and lets the image of ordinary fishermen speak for itself, without drama games and blackmailing emotions.

Camilleri was justified by his choice to give the demanding leading role to a real fisherman from Malta, Jessmark Cyclone, as he manages to give us an extremely inner and natural interpretation, with his sad eyes aiming directly at the heart of the viewer. . An interpretation that was also awarded at the Sundance Festival. Unfortunately, there is no prize for boats, and this is because the traditional Maltese wooden hulls not only co-star, but dominate the film with their expressive eyes showing their frustration with the man, who turns out to be the most dangerous creature on the Earth.

A particularly pleasant surprise from Malta, a film, heartbreaking for the anguish of ordinary people in an ominous future, which is also the official submission of Malta for the Oscar for Best International Film.

IN A FEW WORDS… A fisherman, Jessmark, struggles with his traditional old wooden boat (“luzzu” in his language) to earn a living for his wife and their newborn child, in the same way his father did. his grandfather and his great-grandfather. But it faces stiff competition, illegal fishing and the island’s fish market: the corrupt port authorities, the big fishermen, the black market, the strict rules of the European Union and the devaluation of its humble origins. his wife’s family. Will he renounce the family tradition of fishing to survive? The dilemma he faces becomes even more urgent when he learns that his baby needs special care…

Great Freedom: Drama film, Austrian production of 2021, directed by Sebastian Maize, with Franz Rogowski, Georg Friedrich, Anton von Luck, Thomas Pren and others.

A festival film, aimed at a limited audience, although it talks about issues that concern the general public, such as the power of love and the right to freedom, through a heavy prison drama.

Sebastian Maize’s film, which certainly has its own interest and insight into diversity and inhumane repression mechanisms used by either the Nazis or democratic governments, did not accidentally win the Commission’s “Some Look” award. Of the Cannes Film Festival, has been nominated by Austria for the Oscar for Best International Film and was nominated for the LUX Award of the European Parliament.

Meize tells in a special way, without exaggeration and graphicity, a love story from the years of the War, but also from the persecutions, which unfolds from the early 1940s to 1969, with Hans as the main character, who is in prison. from the Nazis in the concentration camps, because of his homosexuality, and he goes to and from prison until the end of the 60’s due to German law, the famous Article 175, which from the 19th century until 1994, considered homosexuality a criminal offense.

Meize does not follow a linear chronological sequence, but prefers to use a lot of flashbacks, which can confuse the viewer, although good editing work has been done, while the film script is sometimes talkative, vague and creates gaps in the story.

The trump card of the film is the protagonist Franz Rogowski, who we have seen his remarkable performances in films such as “A Hidden Life” by Terence Malik and recently “A Nymph in the Water” by Christian Petzold. Rogowski manages to take on an unexpected, difficult character and give him physical features, with a surprising comfort.

IN A FEW WORDS… In post-war Germany, Hans was rescued from a Nazi concentration camp only to enter and leave prisons. His crime? He is a homosexual. Because of Paragraph 175, which defines homosexuality not merely as a perversion but as a criminal offense, his desire for freedom is systematically destroyed. Under these circumstances, the only stable relationship in his life is that with his longtime inmate, Victor, a convicted murderer. Gradually, what started as disgust evolves into something called love …

Moonfall: The Dark Side of the Moon (Moonfall): Science Fiction Adventure, American production of 2022, directed by Roland Emerich, with Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Kelly Yu, Michael Penia, Donald Sutherland and others.

Another spectacular adventure of destruction and science fiction, by the “lord” of the genre Roland Emerich. A “blog post” that has combined its name with the good and worst moments of commercial cinema.

A director who seems to care only about the fund, as it is no coincidence that he has signed notable films such as “After the Next Day” and “Independence Day” and many more indifferent or bitter failures such as “2012” and “Independence Day 2”.

And of course the examples of this uneven course are endless whether they are films of destruction and science fiction. or thrillers and adventures.

Here, he once again repeats the well-known and most well-worn model of the genre, in a story that wants Halle Berry, a former NASA astronaut, to be the only one who has understood that a strange force pushes the Moon to destroy the Earth and in her quest to save our planet, she will find support only from an old colleague and a conspiracy theorist.

That is, a script that attracts the average American viewer and especially the young audience – putting in the mixer imagination, agony, destruction, American heroes and patriotic outbursts – and of course at its disposal the strong special effects and all the recipes of the genre.

In addition to Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson and John Bradley also star.

IN A FEW WORDS… A mysterious force pulls the Moon out of its orbit around the Earth and pushes it into a series of collisions. With just a few weeks to go before the consequences are catastrophic for everyone around the world, former NASA astronaut Jo Fowler is convinced he has the solution that will save us all, but only astronaut’s old colleague Brian Harper and KC Houseman a conspiracy theorist, they believe. These three heroes will embark on an incredible journey through space to finally find out that the Moon is not what we think it is.

A Happy Family 2: German animated film, German and British production of 2021, directed by Holger Tape.

A fun children’s animation, which moves to mediocrity and is a continuation of the indifferent film of 2017, by Holger Tape and based on the eponymous bestseller by German screenwriter and author David Saffier. A film aimed at infants. The bombers will laugh at the funny versions of the Wisbon family monsters that get involved in another adventure, as a monster hunter catches their eye, but nothing more.

The well-known references to family value and diversity remain constant, political correctness becomes unbearable, while the story and ideas for funny adventures seem to have been further exhausted from the first film, while the clichés come and go with an ease that eventually becomes annoying. .

The film is shown dubbed in Greek.

IN A FEW WORDS… When Baba Yaga and Rainfield become the target of monster hunter Mila Starr, members of the Wisbon family transform into monsters once again. So, father Frankenstein, mom Vampire, daughter Mummy and son Werewolf travel around the world to save their friends, make new “monstrous” acquaintances and realize that no one is perfect. And that’s okay!
