The scariest holiday of the year has arrived again! For those of you who insist that you celebrate Halloween because you love all things creepy and not because it’s become “fashionable,” you’re in the right place. The weather may not resemble autumn at all and it is somewhat difficult to decorate the entrances of our houses as is customary in America but… there are always ways to get into the mood. And the cinema itself is capable of “transporting” us where we want.

We’ve rounded up the 10 best movies – new and not – from the Netflix, Disney+ and Cinobo platforms for countless moments of terror!

  • Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by André Øvredal: Cinobo

Plot: On Halloween night 1968, a group of teenagers discovers a diary, the origins of which are linked to horrific events and unleash demonic presences that haunt the heroes.

Based on the book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz, the film was to be directed by Guillermo del Toro, a fan of such stories. Eventually the Norwegian André Øvredal took over the direction and del Toro became one of the producers. Well shot, with fine performances, strong directorial eye, amazing special effects and make-up, this movie has everything it needs to spread the terror…

  • David Bruckner’s The Night House: Disney+

Plot: Beth is in mourning, having recently lost her husband. As she continues to live in the lake house he had built, she begins to feel his presence. He goes through his things and discovers mysterious things about a past he was unaware of and now he has to figure out what really happened…

Rebecca Hall brings to the big screen a very authentic image of a woman like Beth, a well-written character. Of course there will be times when we shout at the screen “Why are you going there?” but most of the time Beth acts like anyone would. The atmosphere built in the film is extremely creepy and the jump scares will not be easy to predict!

  • John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place: Netflix through 6/11

Plot: With horrible alien creatures now on earth, which although blind, have sensitive hearing and killer instincts, a family tries to survive. They try not to make noises and communicate through sign language.

The film was a huge success and is definitely one of the best horror films of recent years. Directed and starring John Krasinski, his co-star is his real-life wife, Emily Blunt. Two years later, in 2020, the sequel ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ was released, while the spin-off ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ and the second sequel ‘A Quiet Place Part III’ are set for 2024 and 2025 respectively.
