The Romanian city – along with Elefsina and Vesprem in Hungary – ran the year as European Capitals of Culture. We visited Timisoara shortly before the end of its “term” and we convey our impressions.
We visited Timisoara, a city struggling to move towards the new, having to shake off many burdens of the past, but at the same time having hesitation and skepticism about what is this “ahead”, if it is for the best, confused between the Balkans, Eastern and western Europe, between the individual and the collective, matter and spirit. And what makes her more interesting is that exactly this wavering and honest uncertainty is visible in everything in the city and in its people.
Along with our Elefsina, two other cities joined as European Capitals of Culture in 2023: Timisoara in Romania and Vesprem in Hungary. Timisoara 2023 has been quite outgoing: from the beginning of the year, it invited people from all over the world to visit the city and share the experience of the event.
