The structure of the awards ceremony came under fire at the start of the year when it was revealed that no female artists had been shortlisted for the 2023 Best Artist award.
The organizers of the British Music Awards BRIT Awards announced that they would amend their rules in 2024, following a controversy over diversity.
The structure of the awards ceremony came under fire at the start of the year when it was revealed that no female artists had been shortlisted for the 2023 Best Artist award.
The development was a result of the 2021 merger of the Best Male and Best Female Artist categories.
The winner of the award was pop icon Harry Styles, who also addressed the injustice of the absence of female award nominees and dedicated his speech to female artists including Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX and Becky Hill, acknowledging that he had preferential treatment.
Now, according to a new report from BBC News, it has been announced that the organizers of the BRIT Awards will now increase the number of artists that will be shortlisted for the Best Artist award. In 2024 there will be ten candidates from five in the hope of achieving balance, according to the BBC.
The expanded list will also apply to the Best International Artist category from next year.
Organizers have also confirmed that a new award category will be introduced, dedicated exclusively to the R&B genre. The R&B nominees had previously entered a broader Best Pop/R&B category meaning they faced competition from some of pop’s biggest mainstream stars, including Sam Smith and Dua Lipa.
