Prequel ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ dropped to second place with $14.5 million
Beyonce’s documentary film Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, dominated its debut at the US box office in the three-day period December 1-3. According to the chain of movie theaters AMC Theaters is in the first place with receipts of 21 million dollars for North America.
Although post-Thanksgiving theater attendance for the US is usually thin, “Renaissance” exceeded all expectations.
According to the AP, it’s the first time (for this weekend) that a film has topped $20 million at its premiere in 20 years, since the Tom Cruise-starring “The Last Samurai.”

Beyonce wrote, directed and produced the film which follows the “journey” of her world tour from the start in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri. It debuted in 2,539 theaters in the US and Canada, as well as in 94 countries worldwide with $6.4 million from 2,621 theaters.

“To see her resonate with fans and film critics on an “indifferent” weekend is a testament to her immense talent, not only as a performer, but also as a producer and director.Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president of AMC Theaters, said in a statement.
Lionsgate’s prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” dropped to second place with $14.5 million, and Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus One” was third with $11 million.
