In January 2020, the authorities of Amsterdam announced that they would close the famous “Red Light District”, also known as the Red Light District – the famous “street of sin”, where prostitutes were presented as window displays to potential customers.

The area is a popular tourist attraction but residents near the site are complaining about the number of visitors flocking to the area as well as the “activities” taking place, calling for an end to the lawlessness.

Yesterday, the administration of the city of Amsterdam – in a historic decision – announced that the red lights would be transferred in a new area, outside the city center.

The new location is at Europa Boulevard (Europe Avenue) in the south of the Dutch capital, which was judged to be the most suitable for a “love center” outside the city.

The proposal for Europa Boulevard will be presented to the city council early next year for formal approval.

However, according to mayor Femke Halsema it will take seven years before the city’s new love center opens.

Reactions

However, the plans for the transfer are opposed by local residents who do not want sex workers at their door and the crowds that flock to their neon-lit “rooms”.

On the other hand, tens of thousands of people have signed petitions against moving the red lights, calling instead for better crowd control and greater police surveillance in the area they are now in – especially at night.
