One route that is offered for exploration is the one from the room to the living room, if of course the …explorer is going through the first years of his life. This “journey” is taken by the youngest theatre-goers, from the age of 12 months to 3 years following the action of the infant program of the KTBE, entitled “From the room to the living room”.

Sounds, shadows, lights, textures, colors, melodies and of course explorations of objects attract the attention of the little spectators, who watch with their companions the first performance addressed exclusively to them.

It is a story that guides children to the magical world of the house, when the lights go out, through the eyes of an infant, with original melodies by the creator Ioli Rossiu that are reproduced live by the actress Elektra Goniadou.

I am a mother of two children, aged five and three. In the past, when I went to an event with my older daughter, I couldn’t take the baby with me because the show wasn’t age appropriate“, says Fotini Velkopoulou to the Athenian/Macedonian News Agency, who at that time found out in practice the gap that existed. With her friend Eleni Giannoussi, who have done children’s theater, puppet theater and other related educational programs from time to time, they decided to make a show aimed at very young children and then they conceived the exact idea and directed it. “In general, we thought that there should be something like this, as it helps a lot both in the development part of the child, as well as the parent, so that they have experiences in the cultural part with their children from a very early age”, added Ms. Velkopoulou.

What happens when the light goes out and we stay in the dim light just before bed? How annoying can house sounds get? What do adults look like when they are doing business? All these questions are answered by the story of this short route, which has as its axis the movement, the sound and the images that are created. “In this journey there are some funny actions, some more mysterious, some more calm and this whole process ends sweetly and beautifully with melodies and ends in sleep“, notes the director, while most people can imagine mom’s melodious song, the shadows on the wall that soften in a toy with the fingers, the favorite bunny, but also the things that … walk, jump or fly, the furniture that they produce music, the bathtub that becomes the bottom and in general things that have a different form than in adult life.

The performance is addressed to up to 60 people each time, infants, children and their companions, while the bet that no child would cry or be frightened by sounds, lights or flashes was won at the premiere. “There may have been some children who were more active and more communicative, but not with negativity, simply because they wanted to communicate more than the others,” explained Mrs. Velkopoulou and urged parents not to be afraid of the child’s reaction and to dare their participation. “The theater is a living organism and with the spectators you have every time you create a new show. We say at the beginning that if someone feels uncomfortable or if they want to move around the room or if the child gets tired, of course it is within the context to get up and take a walk in the foyer, where there is plenty of space. We don’t want “Shhh! Stop! We’re bothering”, we don’t want that at all“, he characteristically said.

As he also noted, such an outing can help parents overcome the anxiety they have about how their child will behave in such a situation. “The show is set up so that it can welcome and accept every viewer, that children at this age are completely honest and say whatever they feel at the same time. I think it’s a very good start for the parent to start taking responsibility too, or at least be able to set some less strict limits on their child“, he added.

After all, the goal of the State Theater of Northern Greece is to meet the needs of very young spectators and empty from the lack of such an activity in the city, offering the family as a whole a comprehensive entertainment activity. “The KTHBE, for the first time in the post-pandemic era, offers the family the opportunity to look for a suitable show in the most important theater of Thessaloniki. Infants/toddlers in the arms of their companion can co-enjoy their first complete theater experience and we as KTHBE can be an important helper in the first theater trip of many young children“, it is stated in a related announcement.

Performance

After the end of the 30-minute performance there is a ten-minute game where the discovery made during the performance is confirmed and applied. The show – surprise, goes up every Saturday at 12.00 in the Lower Foyer (-1) of the Royal Theatre.
