The first steps
Born in Chicago on December 30, 1946, and raised in New Jersey, Patti Smith learned from an early age to love reading, critical thinking, and those young romantic heroines “who live to the fullest and die young.” She herself was quite patient as a child and there were not a few times when she was in danger of losing her life from some disease.
At the age of 20, she will move to New York with the dream of becoming a poet. There she will meet the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who will change her life. The two would have an intense and highly productive relationship, which Smith would describe at length in her autobiographical book “Just Kids” (2010), which would be honored in the US with the National Book Award. Although they struggled to earn a living, they never stopped encouraging each other to achieve their artistic expression.
