The Hellenic Film Center (EKK) establishes on March 26, 2024 the action “Greek Cinema Day”.

On that day, the entire Greek production of the last four years will be accessible to the public in the cinemas of the territory, with ticket price just 3 euros.

This initiative of EKK is based on its belief that “the Greek film and the Greek theater must coexist in an era of structural changes for film distribution around the world, but also in a moment of international acclaim for Greek and Greek creators. The “Day of Greek Cinema” comes to strengthen the hall, a place of culture whose survival is tested throughout Europe. Purpose of YKK is the screening of the Greek film in one wide audiencewhich Greek cinema has proven to be able to move them”, the relevant announcement emphasizes and adds:

“The communication potential of the Greek film, whether it is aimed strictly at cinephiles or at the general public, is evident from the success of the recent “Fonissa” (390,100 tickets until the second week of 2024), but also from the acceptance of last year’s idiosyncratic films” Magnetic Fields” (28,000 tickets). The general picture of the Greek box office for 2023 is also indicative, a year in which the market began to show signs of recovery after the pandemic (34.8% increase compared to 2022).

The total number of tickets last year was 7,883,000, of which 590,000 were for Greek films (8% of the total), 1,458,500 purely European films (including Greek films, which make up 40.5% of the European total ) and the 5,276,000 American studio films. The image at the top of the box office is also indicative: in first place was “Barbie” (465,000), in second was “Oppenheimer” (426,000) and in third was “Fonissa”, concludes the announcement of the Hellenic Cinema Center.

The action is addressed to all cinemas that have a valid operating license and the cost of the subsidy amounts to 290,000 euros. Each theater has the possibility to choose feature films, produced in the period 2020-23, regardless of whether they have been included in a financing program of the Greek Greek Cycladic Society, through distributors or producers, if the film has not been distributed. The short films and documentaries produced or supported by the Special Covid-19 Programs of the Ministry of Culture and the Cypriot Greek Orthodox Church are added to the pool of films.
