Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Smoky Mountain, East Tennessee, United States. Ussa, the fourth of the twelve children of a poor rural family, grew up, undoubtedly, in difficult circumstances, “making” dreams for a bright future with “materials” the labors, efforts and determination that had been taught by her family environment.

Music was her gift. A gift he discovered at a very young age. “I’ve been rhyming ever since I can remember forming words”she would later confess in her autobiography, “Then I made songs with them”. So, at the age of 6, with her uncle’s guitar and with the inspiration of a corn cob doll, which her mother made for her, she will create her first composition, entitled “Little Tiny Tassletop”.

In 1964, right after graduating, she moved to Nashville with one goal in mind, a career in music. There, it won’t take long to gain recognition. Three years later, as a protégé of popular country singer and TV star Porter Wagoner, she would make regular appearances on his show and record her first big hits with him, gaining the attention of the music industry. Their seven-year partnership, however, would be characterized by possessiveness and suffocating control on Wagoner’s part, bearing many of the hallmarks of an abusive “relationship.” Dolly Parton herself will describe it as a “marriage”, sometimes loving, sometimes quarrelsome, intense, explosive, infuriating, as they disagreed on almost everything.
