In Part I, Eutychis with Elektra and their girls leave by ship from Igoumenitsa to Bari
On Sunday 21st January, Happy Traveler on Skye embarks on a special road trip to the province of Apulia in Lower Italy.
In Part 1, Eutychis with Electra and their girls leave by ship from Igoumenitsa for Bari and begin their journey in the southern part of our neighboring country where there is a strong element of Magna Grecia.
They stroll through the picturesque old town of Bari and learn how the traditional ear-shaped pasta is made.
They drive parallel to the coast and pass through the idyllic Polignano al Mare with its impressive caves. Next stop, Monopoli and the beautiful Alberobello with its characteristic domes.
The first overnight stay is in Otranto also known as “Hydrousa” with its picturesque harbor, where they take an afternoon walk to the castle and try local specialties.
The next day they descend to the tip of the “boot heel of Italy”, and then pass through Gallipoli and Lecce, also called the Florence of the South.
Around Lecce, they also visit the village of Kalimera, which is one of the Greek-speaking villages of the Salento peninsula, also known as Grecia Salentina (Greece of the Salento peninsula).
The sequel takes us through Taranto, the ancient Greek colony of the Spartans, which they will explore in the second part of their journey in the next episode.
