At the center of the debate is the “rampant” use of the word “zorra” in the song, which is usually used when someone wants to call you a “ch…la”, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Spanish authorities told the media this week that they had received more than 300 complaints about the song of the Nebulossa duo. In the last few days the Feminist Movement of Madrid added his voice to those calling for the song to be withdrawn from the competition, stating that it is “verbal violence against women”.

The word is heard 45 times in the song, the organization said in a statement. “Celebrating a term, a word, used as a weapon of humiliation by sexists is a form of public re-victimization”he added.

While Spanish state broadcaster RTVE and the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the competition, both said they approved of Spain’s participation, the feminist group said the public broadcaster’s promotion of the song risks smoothing the line between of young children and adolescents.

However, the 55-year-old Nebulossa singer characterized the song as an attempt to claim the word! “I have often been called a zorra,” stated the María Bas on RTVE. “This song is a way to turn that word into something beautiful.”

On Wednesday, the song ranked as the most viral track on Spotify and No. 3 in the world.

Bas and her husband Mark Dasousa, 49, formed the band in 2018. The couple, who have two children, released their first single in 2020.

Even the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, took a position on the issue. “It seems to me that feminism is not only fair, but it can also be fun, and that kind of challenge has to come from the culture,” he told broadcaster La Sexta. “This is real equality between men and women”he added.
