A refugee from Afghanistan where accused by the British security agency MI5 of carrying out espionage on behalf of Russia he worked for the Foreign Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Home Office, but also the secret security intelligence agency MI6 and the communications watchdog GCHQ.

Citing court filings, the Times reveals, the suspected agent known only as C2 believed to have been recruited by the Russian military intelligence agency GRU from a very young age.

He is accused of lying to British authorities in 2000 about being persecuted by the Taliban in order to gain asylum in the UK.

Having obtained British as well as Russian citizenship, he worked for the British state apparatus and as part of his duties had met with Prime Ministers Cameron and Brown, as well as the then Prince Charles and Prince William.

MI5 stripped him of his British citizenship in 2019 and C2, who denies the charges, has appealed that decision, which is now being heard by the Immigration Appeals Board.
