The reason for Meteora, which interrupts the monotony of the vast Thessalian plain, where their uniqueness lies not only in the rocks, but in the fact that on top of them we live in a rare monastic construction and architecture. According to historians, the first hermits climbed the rocks of Meteora at the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century and a rudimentary ascetic state was established, the Skete of Doupiani or of Stagion.

According to the same data, the first monasteries were built around the 14th century, many of which were renovated or rebuilt from their foundations in the 16th century, a period of particular prosperity and flowering of meteoric monasticism. In their heyday, Meteora (16th – 17th century) counted 24 monasteries, of which only six are functioning today. Meteora is a monument registered in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.
