The monument dates back to the end of the 18th century and is a unique example of the architecture of this period in the region
In rehabilitation operations on Holy Church of Agios Athanasios Rum to Palama Karditsa and conservation of the frescoes of the Holy Step and the Narthex of the Temple, the Ministry of Culture is proceeding with the damage caused to the monument by earthquake of 2021, but also the storm “Daniel“, in September 2023.
The temple is in use, and under permanent maintenance. The last major earthquake, in 2021, with a magnitude of 6.3R, does not appear to have caused serious damage. Its main pathology picture lies in that of dampness both rising and that in higher places from local failures, lack of gutters, as well as in older damages.
The monument dated to end of the 18th century and is a unique example of the architecture of this period in the region. It consists of the main temple, cruciform inscribed with a dome, tetragonal domed narthex-gynaiconite, while it is surrounded by an arched portico on the southwest side.
The main church is recorded with remarkable frescoes dating from 1811-1835, while those in the Narthex from 1892-1896.
During her period Turkish rulethe settlement was structured into three mahalades (parishes): a) Hadakli – Palamas, centered on Agios Athanasios (before 1836), b) Karaber – Palamas, centered on Agios Charalambos (1836) and c) Rum – Palama centered on the Church of Agios Athanasios of Alexandria (Rum).
The name Rum (Roman) implies the predominance of the Greek element in the mahala.
The Church of Agios Athanasios is located in central square of the settlement. According to an inscription above its northern entrance, it was completed in 1811, while another inscription, above the southern entrance to the temple, indicates that it was renovated in 1810, which suggests that there was probably an earlier temple in its place.
The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated: “Following the autopsy we performed on the Church of Agios Athanasios of Rum in Palamas, immediately after the catastrophic storm “Daniel”, which also caused damage to the church, we systematically monitored the behavior of the monument and proceeded immediately to updating the studies to deal with the effects of humidity due to the water that entered the monument, but also other chronic problems. In this context, but also of the priority we have given – in the context of the government plan – for the restoration of damages to affected monuments in Thessaly, we are proceeding with restoration and maintenance operations of the church of Agios Athanasios. With the proposed interventions, the problems of the building are satisfactorily addressed, while the frescoes of the temple are protected and highlighted”.
